A new fence adds privacy - if the structure is right. These seven tips prevent leaning posts and loose boards. Order materials via our fencing category.

1. Plan height and boundaries

Check local rules for maximum height and boundary distance.

2. Posts deep enough

At least one third of post length in the ground. Use concrete for stability.

3. Choose timber

Douglas is popular; treated pine is budget-friendly. Hardwood posts last longest in wet ground.

4. Wind

Solid panels catch wind - consider gaps or trellis sections.

5. Fixings

Use stainless or galvanised screws. Pre-drill to prevent splitting.

6. Maintenance

Clean moss yearly; oil if you want to slow greying.

7. Calculate materials

Use our fence configurator for posts and boards.
