Short answer: At Jan Sok you buy breathable membrane per metre: Vistex 1.50 m wide for €1.10 and Megatec 1.50 m or 3.00 m wide for €2.15 and €4.50 (prices 23 October 2026, incl. VAT). Breathable membrane goes on the cold outside, under the roof covering. Vapour control membrane goes on the warm inside of the insulation.

You lay breathable membrane on the outside of a roof or wall, under the roof covering. The membrane keeps out rain and driven snow, but lets water vapour escape from the structure to the outside. A vapour control membrane does the opposite. You lay it on the warm side of the insulation, that is, on the inside. That way, moist indoor air does not get into the insulation.

The rule is: tighter inside than outside. We sell membrane per running metre (prices 23 October 2026, incl. VAT):

For a shed or canopy without insulation, breathable membrane under the roof-tile sheets is enough on its own. If you insulate the roof, a vapour control membrane on the inside is also needed. You will find insulation boards under insulation. Also read which PIR thickness to choose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between breathable and vapour control membrane?

Breathable membrane lets water vapour through and keeps rain out; you lay it on the cold outside. Vapour control membrane holds back water vapour; you lay it on the warm inside of the insulation.

Which side does the vapour control membrane go on?

Vapour control membrane always goes on the warm side of the insulation, that is, on the inside. That way, moist indoor air does not get into the insulation.

What happens if I forget the vapour control membrane?

Moisture from the indoor air can then get into the insulation and condense there. That lowers the insulation value and can cause timber rot in the structure.

Is breathable membrane waterproof?

Breathable membrane is water-resistant: rain and driven snow stay outside. Water vapour can still escape to the outside, so the structure stays dry.

Which membrane goes under roof-tile sheets?

Under roof-tile sheets or roof tiles you lay a breathable membrane, such as Vistex or Megatec breathable. If you insulate the roof, a vapour control membrane also goes on the inside.
