Short answer: Our oak boards are rough-sawn 20 × 200 mm, available in 3.00 m (€28.15) and 4.00 m (€37.55) incl. VAT. Durability class 2, from stock in Meppel. Fix them with stainless steel - the tannic acid in oak attacks galvanised steel.

Oak boards are what you use where the timber is meant to be seen and has to last: cladding, tabletops, benches, gates and bank revetment work above the waterline. We supply them rough-sawn in 20 × 200 mm, which gives a slightly rough surface with the characteristic flame figure. Looking for a planed board for cladding work? What should you look for in oak boards?

Three things, in this order. Heartwood determines durability - the pale sapwood at the outer edge is not durable. Stainless-steel fixings are not a recommendation but a requirement, because tannic acid combined with galvanised steel causes blue-black stains that become visible within one season. And pre-drilling saves you a lot of frustration: oak is hard, and without pre-drilling the board splits at the end.

Oak or Douglas fir?

A Douglas fir board of 22 × 200 mm at 3.00 m costs €10.80, compared with €28.15 for oak. So you pay well over two and a half times as much for one durability class of difference (2 versus 3) and a different look. For a fence or deck, Douglas fir is often the wiser choice; for visible work that has to last for generations, oak is worth it. The full comparison is in oak or Douglas fir boards.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes of oak boards do you supply?

Rough-sawn boards of 20 × 200 mm, in 3.00 m and 4.00 m. Other widths or thicknesses are not normally in stock, but request a quote and we will see what the sawmill can supply.

How much does a 20 × 200 mm oak board cost?

€28.15 for 3.00 m and €37.55 for 4.00 m, incl. VAT, as of July 2026. The current price is always on the product page.

Do I need to pre-drill oak boards?

Yes. Oak is hard and splits at the end if you screw into it without pre-drilling. Pre-drill at about 70 percent of the screw diameter and keep at least 2 cm from the end of the board.

Can I leave oak boards untreated?

Yes. Untreated oak weathers to a silver-grey patina without losing durability. If you want to keep the warm brown colour, apply wood oil every year. In both cases, do treat the end grain, because that is where water soaks in fastest.

Which screws do I use for oak boards?

Always stainless steel, preferably A4 outdoors. Oak contains tannic acid, and combined with galvanised or untreated steel this causes blue-black stains around every screw, plus corrosion of the fixing itself.
