Azobe is a tropical hardwood species originating from West and Central Africa. The wood is characterised by a very high density and a dark reddish-brown colour that weathers evenly to grey under light and weather exposure. Under European classification Azobe falls in durability class 1, meaning it is naturally very durable (>25 years) without any chemical treatment.
This makes Azobe fundamentally different from softwoods such as Douglas or larch, which have a lower natural durability and are not suitable for permanent water contact. For applications where timber stands permanently in water or ground, Azobe is one of the few species that performs reliably.
