Door hand: L or R

The hand tells you which side the hinges are on. You look from the side the door opens towards. If the hinges are on the left, the door is left-handed (L). The single Douglas fir doors come in L and R, for example solid door L and solid door R, at the same price. On a shed the door usually opens outwards so it takes no space inside. If in doubt, check the drawing on the product page.

Fitting and maintenance

  • Set the frame level and square; a crooked frame gives a sticking door.
  • Keep the bottom of door and frame clear of the ground and standing water. Douglas fir is class 3: fine above ground, not in wet soil.
  • Hinges and locks are not always included. Check the product page and ask us which hardware fits.
  • Treat the door all round with stain or oil, including the bottom edge. See Douglas fir maintenance and Tenco stain.

Making your own door or frame

If you want to build a door or frame to size yourself, we supply the timber: Douglas fir 45 × 95 or 45 × 120 mm for the frame and cladding or boards as infill, cut to length. See timber sizes and timber cut to size. For a complete shed, read building a timber shed.

Frequently asked questions

What size shed door do I need?

For a bicycle or lawnmower a single door of about 100 × 205 cm is enough. For a trailer, garden tractor or a row of wheelie bins, choose a double door of about 185 × 205 cm or the XXL version of 240 × 215 cm. Always measure the rough opening and compare it with the size on the product page.

What do L and R mean on a door?

The hand of a door tells you which side the hinges are on. In the Netherlands you look from the side the door opens towards: if the hinges are on the left, the door is left-handed (L). Check the drawing on the product page before ordering.

Does the door come with a frame?

That depends on the product. Check the product page or call +31 522 851 551. For garden gates in a fence, Jan Sok supplies a separate universal frame from €27.55 (pressure-treated, prices as of 5 October 2026).

Do I need to treat a Douglas fir door?

Yes. Treat a Douglas fir door outdoors with stain or oil, preferably within three months of fitting, including the bottom edge and end grain. Keep the door a few centimetres off the ground so the bottom can dry.

Which door should I choose for a garden gate?

For a gap in the fence, choose a board gate on a steel or timber frame, from €82 in pressure-treated timber. For a wide driveway, a sliding gate of 130 × 195 cm is an option, from €336.95 (prices as of 5 October 2026).
