Use three sources together: European durability classes (EN 350), origin labels such as FSC or PEFC where relevant, and a timber merchant that states per species where it can and cannot be used - especially with ground contact. Which sources are trustworthy?
- EN 350 (durability class) - how well heartwood resists fungal decay. Class 1–2 is typical for many tropical hardwoods. See ground contact and durability classes.

- The merchant - a serious yard names the species, use case, fasteners (often stainless) and whether the board/post may go in the ground. No vague “lasts forever” claims without context.
- Yard experience - what we see in Meppel and on customer projects: hardwood in sheet piling and decks lasts when details are right; wrong fasteners or standing water remain the weak points.
Shops that only write “tropical hardwood” without a species name (okan, azobé, …) give too little to go on. Always ask for the trade name and the intended use.

Sustainability: two meanings people mix up
- Technical service life - how long the timber lasts in weather (EN 350 + construction details).
- Responsible origin - forest management, legality, certification labels.
A class-1 board sitting in standing water with the wrong screws will not hit that lifespan. Conversely, a certified board used wrongly still fails. Good information connects both.
What a merchant can and cannot promise

What nobody can honestly guarantee without knowing your construction: an exact number of years “without maintenance, in every situation”. Moisture traps, end grain in soil and cheap screws matter as much as the name on the order.
